What is this idea of
grace? – excerpt from Otto on grace
Grace is not a “get-out-of-jail-card”
but rather an empowerment to live a righteous life before the king of kings
In Ephesians grace is
described as “the
gift of God, [which is] not a result of works” (Ephesians 2:8-9). It is in this moment that the transcendent breaks into a profane
civilization. Otto describes this scene as “the recipient of divine grace feels
and knows ever more and more surely, as he looks back on his past, that he has
not grown into his present self through any achievement or effort of his own,
and that, apart from his own will or power, grace was imparted to him, grasped
him, impelled, and led him” (pg. 87).
Personal reflection: I
am very much aware of this feeling…I have had many of moments that I have
become aware of that looking back, there is no way that I could have earned the
current heart posture I have regarding the virtues of the Lord. Thank you Jesus
for a life empowered by grace
