Eating is a funny thing. Have you ever thought about why you have to eat so much all the time? Living creatures are addicted to eating! This is because it is the way we find nutrients, which can be converted into energy. But sometimes we are so consumed with the activity of eating. In fact, many creatures' lives revolve around eating. But why are we like that? I think there's more to eating than we often think about.
Eating, as we saw in Like Water for Chocolate and Babette's Feast possesses some positive qualities. If you think about it, many vivacious memories are had at the dinner table or out to eat. Eating exists as a ritual that allows us to participate in the lives of others. I think this is partially because it is something that we all share in. None of us can refuse to eat, unless it be for a short period of time. So this eating brings a commonality to our experience and thus allows us to enter into an experience together. But eating must not be abused. Sometimes, we gorge ourselves and in doing so lose the beauty of the experience of eating and the food itself. Eating must be moderated so that our experience of it can be full and life-giving.
