Luke Taylor Reading Blog #3: A Just God

I was doing some research on Calvin’s beliefs and one point he makes is that God has limited atonement for his people. What he means by that is that God has an elect people that he plans (predestination) to have saved and join him in the eternal life of heaven. While that can be understandable and makes sense; there is something Calvin says that really makes me stumble for a second.

He says that Jesus Christ’s sacrifice for mankind (dying on the cross for our sins) was “sufficient for all but only meant for few.” While I know God loves his people more than they can ever imagine it makes me wonder… why not save all of them then if the atonement for ALL of man’s sins is paid for? It then leads me to this next question, is it because while God how the power to control all people and their actions and be an omnipotent God, does he want mankind to make the ultimate decision of whether to follow him or not? And if so, if that him giving us free will? So many argue about whether free will exists or if that is really just God always controlling our decisions and making knowing what we’re doing and sending us where he desires. Does God give mankind the ability to choose to follow him or not (free will) or does he really just control all things and makes us fall under the illusion of free will?

Let me know your thoughts I’m curious!
