Bupe Okeowo: Outside Topic #1: Grace and Religion
After finishing my research paper on Seven Pounds, I started thinking about my topic and how it relates to different aspects in life. In my paper, I argued about how Ben Thomas sacrificed his body for the wrong reasons and why it can not be considered graceful like Jesus' Christ. Ben accidentally killed seven people in a car accident and decided he would donate seven vital organs in order to pay his debt. He chose the seven people based on whether or not they were "good" people. As I was writing this paper, I had my mind made up and thought that he should not have donated just to make up for his mistake. I thought his heart was in the wrong place and it was not the right reason to do that. You cant undo your wrong but doing something you consider "right". As I was watching a soccer match, one of the players accidentally gave up a goal and caused to his team to be down a goal the whole match. After his mistake, he worked twice as hard because he knew if he scored, it would make up for his blunder. I started wondering, why I thought it was okay in some instances to make up for your mistakes but not in Ben's case. As an athlete, I know if I make a mistake during the game, I will work hard to make up for it. For this exact reason, I wonder why I did not have the same mind set when I thought about Ben's situation. Is this the same?
