Stuck in Time: Kairos, Chronos, and the Flesh in Groundhog Day
This
reading mentions a passage in Paul “For whatever a person sows, that he will
also reap.” In the movie Groundhog Day Phil repeats the same day over and over
again. He is stuck in time; he was such
a nasty person before he became stuck in the same day. As Paul said Phil sowed
what he reaped; in a way Phil almost deserved to undergo a transformation. Before
Phil was transformed he went through a period of trying to escape; nothing
mattered yet again to him. He lived life like it was his last day in attempts
to break the cycle.
As days
went by, with tomorrow never coming, Phil understood that life and reality were
not about living for himself but about living for other people, which brought
him to the realization that he does not have to live in a chaotic world. Before
Phil’s transformation he was not satisfied, nothing fulfilled him. As the
ritual of living the same day over and over, the ritual changed his life for
the better. Phil understands that life is something that is full of joy, love
and relationships.
