Corinne Beale- Color Techniques in Film (Personal Post)
Throughout the course of this semester, I have
learned and developed skills in analyzing films in a way that I never would
have thought to do before. We have learned several techniques throughout the
semester that filmmakers use to appeal to viewers. One of these techniques is
the use of color. This has probably been my favorite technique to learn and use
in analyzing films. It is hard for me to imagine what films were like before
color TV. So much can be portrayed through color alone in films. For example,
it the film Aladdin, Jafar is an evil
character and is portrayed in black and red in order to depict darkness and his
evil spirit. In contrast, the Genie was a light blue which gives the viewer a
sense of comfort and lightheartedness. The color of specific scenes can set
the tone for sections of films, or for the entirety of the movie. It is amazing
to learn how much meaning is embedded in what previously seemed like such a
small part of films.
