The film Paris Texas employs a number of film techniques that contrast the mundane with the transcendent. Part of the film follows a man walking in a straight line toward a destination. He walks on the road, through fields, and even in the desert. On parts of this journey, the camera makes him look like a small speck, while other shots display a closeup of his face. Many times, his face is set in the camera with a backdrop of mountains or rock formations. These pictures emanate the reality of the transcendent. An interesting dichotomy that the filmmaker uses is a picture of the man walking along the power lines toward the mountains. This shows the stark contrast between civilization/industrialization and the sacred. This is a theme that I often find in my life, and I question man's dominionist motivation to take over the world.
