This reading was discovered on a
blog, similar to this one. The blog was developed by a course at the University
of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. The blog’s title is Media, Film, Music and Religion, and it covers topics including
religion in movies. This particular post was discussing the incorporation of
religion into Disney films. The blog noted that Disney’s Mulan and Aladdin are the
only two original Disney films that incorporated ideas from eastern, rather than
western religions. Although it is never explicitly stated what religion is
practiced, Mulan contains many
practices, traditions and values of ancient, traditional Chinese religions.
Likewise, Aladdin never explicitly
states the religion either. However, several times during the movie, one of the
characters will say, “Praise Allah!” This is indicative that the Arabian
culture is practicing Islam. It is interesting to learn and discover how
filmmakers incorporate different religious practices into movies without
explicitly stating what religion it is.
