Bupe Okeowo Outside Topic #2 Movies
One thing about my self is that I am simple and I do not read in between the lines. A few weeks ago, my friend texted me about one of our favorite shows, Breaking Bad. She said that the show ended after the 62nd episode and the 62nd element in the periodic table is Samarium. Samarium is used to treat lung cancer. For those who don't know about the show, the main character had lung cancer throughout the whole series and that was a major part of the show. I found that fact very interesting but I later asked her if she thought they did that on purpose, or whether it was just a coincidence. That is the mindset I've always had. I see things but I never look for the deeper meaning because I just never thought there was. That led over into this class as well. When I saw the movies we were watching and even my research paper movie, I thought, there isn't religion in them and if there is, it's probably just a coincidence. As this semester went and we discussed the many themes and underlying elements, I couldn't help but think whether this was done purposefully or just a coincidence. After researching the movies and reading some of the directors thoughts, I realized that it is on purpose and most like to send subliminal messages in their movies. I had already seen some of the films like Groundhog Day and Seven Pounds, and it wasn't until this class that I actually thought about the true meaning of the films. Now when I watch things, I'm always trying to look for the deeper meaning in the movie.
