Luke Jeffery: Outside Reading #5

"Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. As you sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself that they also may be sanctified by the truth" - John 17:17-19

This passage is found in the Bible and is referred to as one of Jesus' last prayers.  John chapter 17 gives us a look into Jesus' prayer life and we find out what He views as important in prayer.  I love this particular passage because He is praying for His disciples. Jesus is praying for those whom God has given Him, his spiritual sons.  He lived all of his life with these men, from sleeping to eating to goofing around to preaching to massive crowds and healing the sick, they saw it all.  This is mind-blowing to me that the God of all creation would open Himself up in such a weak and vulnerable way to those around Him. Surely the disciples could not have perceived the weight of all of these encounters, but they were profoundly affected by it.  I think we are the same way sometimes.  We do not understand or experience the weight of experiences that God gives us sometimes.  But instead of being bogged down by the weight of not fully understanding, let us be like the disciples and press into the truth of Jesus' statements. The disciples, despite the fact that the messed up and wandered away from God, were able to find Jesus through reflecting on what He had been to them and what He had done.  We can do the same thing and we should know that Jesus prays for us just like he prayed for His disciples.
