Luke Taylor Reading Blog #4: “Be Still and Know that I Am God”

I was reading Psalms 46 the other day and I came across one of my favorites verses of all time. It is Psalms 46:10 and it says “be still and know that I am God.” What I really love about that verse is how simple and point blank it sounds. It is simply reminding us to just be still, stop what we are doing, and remember that he is God. It is a verse that seems so simple but has so much meaning behind it.
To me, it reminds me of how powerful God is. There are times when I am having a very tough day and I confess that I forget how incredible and powerful God is and great his love is for me. This verse reminds me that God sent his ONLY son to die for ME because his love for me is indescribable and impossible to measure. That is what I love about this verse; it has such great meaning to it. Even Jesus would apply to this verse. In fact, he would go out at times to be alone with his Father and spend time with him in stillness. Sometimes all the Father is asking us to do is to be still in silence and to remember him, to think about him and know how much he cares for us. Jesus knew how important it was to spend time with God and so even when he had complete craziness going on and was one of the busiest to ever walk this earth; he was still able to find time for God. It reminds me that I am never too busy to spend time with God. Even when school work is at an all-time high, Young Life is getting pretty crazy, things with THRIVE are being very demanding and my job is continuously asking more out of me; I will always remember to be still and know that he is God and that he loves me and that I will get through it.

What is even cooler about this verse is that so many people have different understandings or articulations to what that verse means to them. I have shared a little of what it means to me but to you reading that verse could mean something completely different. Give it a read and really think about that verse and ask yourself what it means to you!
