John Tyler: Reading National Geographic

I was Reading April’s edition and came across an article on coal mining. In the article it stated, “The U.S. mines more than a billion tons of coal a year. Once it came mostly from underground mines in the East; now strip mines in the West dominate.  Domestic demand has fallen lately, but exports to Europe and Asia have increased.”

I think that last line is shocking.  It is sad how America’s bad habits can become not only another nation’s problem but bad tendency as well.  The reality is that many people either follow or depend America, thus our actions are closely watched and then mimicked. Mountains across America are being literally blown up and then dumped in valleys for coal.  If we wish to continue to live on earth and enjoy its beauty, we must remember our roles as stewards of God’s creation.  In Norfolk’s port over 20 million tons of coal move through its terminal each year.  It is amazing how much goes on just a few miles away from CNU.
