Luke Jeffery: Like Water for Chocolate Blog
Like Water for Chocolate explored the themes of love. There are four types of love, including agape, filio, storage, and eros. Particularly, this film portrayed agape and eros. It showed how physical desire can lead one to understand transcendence. Our culture is so fixated on sex that we need to look deeper into this concept to truly understand how to find the transcendent in eros. Lewis says, "Banish play and laughter from the bed of love and you welcome in another goddess." I find this to be true and argue that we must not be ashamed of sex or only think of it narrowly in the physical sense, but rather we should let our spirituality engage in the process as well. We are both natural and spiritual beings and should thus participate in the world as such.
