In
class we watched two examples of Midrash of the Ten Commandments. The
first one we looked at was the first commandment, have no other gods
before me. These films analyze how these commandments are still
applicable in today's society. In the film the father in the show was
consistently putting technology before his son. Because of his own
stubbornness and belief in technology and his own judgement, he lost
his child. The thing I appreciated about this film was that it took
some of the oldest Biblical text and brought it into today's time.
While the film was extremely sad to watch, I think that the
film-makers did that intentionally to make the viewer realize that
the gravity of your sin is death, and while it is something we do not
want to see or experience it is reality.
The
second film we watched tells the story of a young boy who turns into
a serial killer. I think the use of a young child having such a dark
and twisted mind was also referencing our innate sin nature. This
shattering of innocence that the audience experiences is difficult to
experience not only because someone is doing such terrible evils but
even more so that its only a child. The filmmakers did this to show
that anyone is possible of committing these sins against God whether
you choose to believe it or not. While dark and unpleasant, The
Decalogues provide examples of sinning against God and the
detrimental consequences of it through this at times difficult to
watch film.
